Quick Hits OSHA is making mental wellness a significant part of its modern safety framework. Employers may want to ensure that their safety and health management systems include worker input to ensure psychologically safe environments. Psychological risk prevention may include employee assistance programs, leaves of absence accommodations, and other accommodations to prevent and mitigate risk exposure. Psychological safety refers to the mental and emotional well-being of workers in the workplace, including well-being following traumatic workplace events, high-stress work environments, and employee substance use disorders. Improved psychological safety is directly correlated to employee retention, incident reporting compliance, and workplace violence prevention. While there is no specific standard for psychological safety under the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act, OSHA addresses psychological risks through the General Duty Clause. The General Duty Clause requires employers to provide a workplace free from recognized hazards causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm. To prove a General Duty Clause violation for psychological safety, OSHA would need to show a recognized hazard of workplace stressors specific to the worksite, that the employer was aware of the stressors, that feasible means of addressing the stressors existed, and that the employer’s efforts were insufficient. Workload can be managed. Jobs can be designed with autonomy and voice. Leaders can be trained to create psychological safety. Systems can be built that reward recovery and fairness, not just output. Which means harm to our workers isn’t inevitable — it’s a design choice. Organizations that fail to design for good work will pay for it in absenteeism, turnover and disengagement. But the deeper cost is borne by the workers. People don’t thrive when they’re confused, unsupported, or underused. They thrive when they feel capable and valued. Research by organizational psychologist Arnold Bakker shows that when employees have structural resources (such as autonomy), social resources (such as support), and challenging demands (such as growth tasks), they experience more flow and less burnout. If organizations are serious about sustainable performance, they need to design for it. That means pacing workloads instead of treating every week like quarter-end. Well-designed work provides energy. Poorly designed work sucks it out. Designing roles that are sustainable, setting realistic expectations, and creating cultures where people feel safe and valued are central to worker’s mental health and sustainable high performance. They also fuel innovation and pay dividends in productivity. The pathway for enabling a fully functioning and committed workforce is through designing the way that people work. The solution isn’t to eliminate pressure from work entirely, but to respond to it in the right way. Even small, intentional shifts can have a significant impact on how we cope, protect our wellbeing, and sustain high performance. Here, six experts share their simple, actionable tips for individuals and leaders that can make a big difference in handling everyday stress more effectively. Reinforce psychological safety Ultimately, whether we feel able to manage stress at work comes down to the environment around us and our relationships with our manager and colleagues. Safe spaces are built and reinforced through everyday, small actions. “Psychological safety creates structure to give people what they need to thrive and do their best work, acting as the human-centered foundation of healthy workplace cultures,” says Helen Beedham, organizational expert, speaker, and author of People Glue . Without it, stress often goes unspoken and unaddressed. Beedham emphasizes that it’s a collective effort that must be actively supported by leaders, managers, and peers; without this secure foundation and ongoing reinforcement, people’s freedom to express themselves and their concerns will quickly falter. Recognizing individuality is also key; some need more encouragement and structure, while others are naturally more comfortable speaking up. At its core, it’s about creating the conditions for trust, openness, and meaningful engagement. “When these conditions are in place, people feel safe to share what’s troubling them without fear of criticism or consequences,” Beedham notes.
