PWCPS summer meals program gives out more than 100,000 meals

The useful part

Prince William County Public Schools (PWCPS) wrapped up a successful, first of its kind, summer meals program Wednesday that provided summer meal kits to families with kids under the age of 18. "This is a supplement to families' grocery bills, which we know are high." The need is apparent when you look at the amount of people who showed up Wednesday. The line of cars wrapped all the way back around Colgan and came back up where families pick up their food.

How it works

• County as the second highest locality for food insecurity in the region, behind Prince George's County.
• "We can take everything home, and it's very helpful for us," a mother told News4.
• One child, Noah, said he loves "the Scooby Snacks." The program was funded through a U.S.
• Department of Agriculture program that Prince William hopes will become a regular offering each summer.

Andrea Early is the school district's director of food and nutrition and helped load families up with fresh produce, milk and healthy food to bridge the gap between the end of last school year and the start of the upcoming school year. "We're just helping meet nutrition needs in our community," Early said.
