Reddit experiments with turning text threads into narrated videos and audio

Reddit has begun an experiment that transforms some text posts and their comments into short videos with narrated audio and synced on-screen text. The format pulls the original post and a curated set of replies, presents them as a concise clip (the Verge example was roughly three minutes long), and highlights the text as it's read.

How it looks and how users access it

On the web, posts converted to the new format show a slider at the top with two options: "Read" for the traditional text thread and "Play" for the narrated video. The video player displays the text while it's voiced and carries a visible label indicating the conversation is voiced by automated narration. Reddit says the feature will roll out to iOS and Android following the initial web test.

Reddit is not converting all content. The company is manually selecting which existing posts will be adapted for the experiment. The stated goal of the early test is to learn whether people find the format useful and how to deliver it in a way that feels authentic to the platform and its communities.

Reddit has framed the work as part of a broader push to modernize its video experience and provide different ways for users to consume content. The company's leadership has noted the popularity of off-platform videos that read Reddit content aloud and expressed interest in letting users listen to posts in the background. This feature effectively brings that listening experience inside Reddit itself.

Benefits: The narrated videos lower the barrier for people unfamiliar with forum-style threads or who prefer listening over reading. They also create short multimedia content that may be easier to share or watch quickly.

Trade-offs: Converting text to spoken clips introduces risks. Automated narration can mispronounce words or attribute lines to the wrong commenter. Any selection or editing of comments changes the thread's original flow. Those constraints are part of why Reddit is limiting the experiment and choosing posts manually.

Each video explicitly notes that it's a "Real conversation voiced by automated narration" to make clear the audio is a production rather than original human recordings. The platform retains the original text view and makes it available via the read/play toggle.

At publication, the experiment was live on Reddit's web interface with mobile rollouts scheduled to begin the following Tuesday. Reddit confirmed the manual-selection approach in a spokesperson's comment to The Verge.

Expect a measured expansion if early feedback is positive, with a focus on whether viewers engage more with narrated clips and how communities react to editorial choices made during conversion.
