One province, five road trips through the Free State

Why drive the Free State? The province covers broad grasslands, sandstone ranges and quiet towns. Instead of picking a single destination, this guide frames the province as five short road trips, each organized around a clear reason to keep driving: scenery, geology, history, open-country riding or a combined eastern highlands loop.

The routes are compact and suitable as long weekend escapes or longer circuits. Use the towns named as bases to explore nearby sights and activities rather than as isolated endpoints.

Highlands and Sandstone (Clarens → Golden Gate → Fouriesburg → Ficksburg) Travel east toward the Maluti Mountains for sandstone cliffs, montane grasslands and hiking. Clarens is the starting village with galleries, craft shops and cafés. From there, the R712 crosses Golden Gate Highlands National Park, known for its golden sandstone formations and birdlife. Continue through Fouriesburg's mountain-framed farmland and finish at Ficksburg, known locally for its cherry industry. Best for mountain scenery, trails and photography.

Meteorite and Vaal River (Parys → Vredefort → Vredefort Dome → Parys) Base yourself in Parys on the Vaal River and make geology the focus. The Vredefort Dome is the world's largest and oldest known meteorite impact structure and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The impact shaped a landscape of exposed rock, ridges and hills. Parys also offers riverside leisure, galleries and outdoor activities, making it a balanced hub for both geology and recreation.

Heritage Heartland (Bloemfontein → Winburg → Brandfort → Bloemfontein) Start in Bloemfontein, the provincial capital, with its museums, memorials and historic buildings. Drive north to Winburg, one of the Free State's oldest proclaimed towns and a stop for colonial and Voortrekker-era history. Proceed to Brandfort, associated with the life of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, before returning to Bloemfontein. This route is paced for museum visits and time on site to consider how towns and landscapes reflect multiple historical periods.

Southern Free State (Bloemfontein → Philippolis → Bethulie → Gariep Dam) Point south for expansive Karoo-style scenery. Philippolis is a historic detour with older buildings and a literary connection. Bethulie sits above the Gariep Dam, South Africa's largest reservoir, and the route opens into big skies and wide vistas. Gariep Dam provides opportunities for waterside recreation, birdwatching and relaxed weekends beside the reservoir. This is a quieter drive that privileges landscape and shoreline stops.

Eastern Free State adventure (Bethlehem → Harrismith → Memel → Clarens)

• Combine routes if you have multiple days—Clarens and Bloemfontein are natural connectors.
• Expect quieter secondary roads outside the N1 corridor and plan fuel and food stops in the towns named.

These five routes offer focused ways to explore the Free State without trying to cover the whole province in one trip. Each route highlights a different landscape or theme so you can choose the drive that fits what you want to see and do.
