Hidden macOS code reveals new details about AirPods with cameras

Macworld Thanks to a video accidentally included in the macOS 26.7 beta, we got our first real confirmation that Apple is, as rumored, working on AirPods with cameras in them. Despite the video and references being found in such a recent beta, we're assured that this product isn't actually shipping until next year. Now, thanks to an eagle-eyed member of the MacRumors forums, we have some idea of the capabilities of the in-development AirPods with cameras.

How it works

• The user found a framework called "AccessorySensorManager" that provides some details of how these things might work.
• While the framework focuses on standard color images, there...
• Instead, they send still images in the background for Visual Intelligence to process, but nothing gets saved to your Photos app or anything like that.
• Active mode is when a request is made (such as asking Siri), and each earbud captures a 640×640 image and returns a 1024×1024 processed image to your iPhone.
• In Passive mode, the cameras take really low-resolution 320×320 or 512×512 images at a continuous rate.
