SC2, the leisure attraction on Rhyl's promenade operated by DLL, has retained the Visit Wales Gold Award for Quality Assured Visitor Attractions after an in-depth Visit Wales Visitor Attraction Assessment (VAQAS). The assessment is delivered as a mystery visit to evaluate the visitor experience without prior preparation by the attraction.
SC2 is a mixed-family attraction and draws significant seasonal footfall. During the summer it brings over 10,000 visitors a week to Rhyl, positioning it among North Wales' larger day-visitor attractions. Its core visitor facilities listed in the assessment and in the attraction's public description include:
- A waterpark with multiple flume rides targeting older children, teens and adults.
- An outdoor Splash Pad for warm weather, aimed at younger families.
- Ninja Tag and a multi-level assault course for active play and competitive group activity.
- Adventure Play, a dinosaur-themed play area designed for younger visitors.
- On-site catering including the Rainforest Diner and an outdoor Terrace for family meals and rest breaks.
Groves noted that the Visit Wales assessment is a mystery visit, which means the attraction could not plan specifically for the inspection. He added that SC2 achieved full marks in several areas of the assessment and that the team is confident it delivers a gold-standard service on a day-to-day basis.
What this means for visitors and local tourism
For visitors, the Gold Award signals that SC2 meets a national benchmark across facilities, cleanliness, customer service and the overall visitor journey. For Rhyl and the wider North Wales visitor economy, SC2's consistent footfall contributes to local tourism activity during peak months, and the attraction's continued accreditation supports its reputation in regional leisure marketing.
Retaining the Gold Award implies ongoing operational attention: staff training, cleaning and maintenance schedules, front-of-house customer handling, and the physical condition of rides and play areas. The mystery-visit format of VAQAS requires consistent standards every day rather than episodic improvements for inspections.
SC2's renewed Visit Wales Gold Award confirms the site meets Visit Wales' highest quality benchmark for visitor attractions. The award is supported by tangible elements visitors can expect: diverse family-focused attractions, clean and well-presented facilities, and catering options for post-activity breaks. Management frames the accolade as validation of routine operational standards and an incentive to continue delivering strong visitor experiences.
