# What the reel shows
WeFX released a VFX breakdown reel that focuses on creature and transformation work for Season 4 of MGM+'s sci-fi horror series From. The reel highlights three main types of work: digitizing and animating eight-foot practical dolls, building digital doubles for violent scenes, and creating transformation rigs for characters like the Man in Yellow becoming Sophia and Fatima's monster side.
# Scale and staffing
The studio has supported the show since Season 2. For Season 4, 81 artists led by visual effects supervisor Ryan Ng and VFX producer Christine Tsao spent eight months delivering nearly 150 shots. Executive VFX supervisor on the season was Mo Ghorbankarimi, with Amanda Lariviere as VFX supervising producer and Cesar Dacol Jr. heading creature effects. Show VFX supervisor Roberto Biagi will join WeFX to present the work at Fan Expo Canada.
# Digitizing the dolls
- Photogrammetry and ZBrush were used to sculpt the dolls inside and out.
- Maya handled rigging.
- Stitching, stuffing and fabric simulations were run in Houdini.
- Finals were rendered in Arnold.
Each doll received its own hair simulation. Ng described individually simulated hair systems so each doll's hair would respond naturally and carry distinct movement "personalities." The team ran multiple simulations to animate the mouth tearing, then tested broken buttons as fangs per showrunner direction.
# Birds and feather work
# Digital doubles and gore
# Transformations and rigging
Sophia called for dislocated joints, bones moving unnaturally, sliding skin and unusual anatomical transitions. WeFX developed a transformation rig that blended two digital doubles and allowed isolated animation of each, giving animators control over mixed anatomies and staged reveals.
Fatima's monster side was designed by the creature department to draw on popular movie monsters and traits of the show's established creature, Smiley. The primary constraint was that Fatima remain recognizably Fatima even as the creature traits emerged.
# Credits and presentation
WeFX's Season 4 work credits include Ryan Ng (visual effects supervisor) and Christine Tsao (VFX producer) among a larger team. The studio will present the breakdown reel with show VFX supervisor Roberto Biagi at Fan Expo Canada on August 29 at 2 p.m., Room 707, Metro Convention Centre, Toronto.
# Concrete technical stack
Photogrammetry, ZBrush, Maya, Houdini (fabric, grooming and simulations), and Arnold for final renders were the main tools named in the breakdown reel discussion.
