Useful takeaways from this story.

The plan prioritises ocean-facing living: living, dining, kitchen, gym, sauna and workspace all face Bondi Beach to maximise daylight views.

Two major design moves required client persuasion: relocating the master bedroom to the rear to free the front for wellness and public spaces, and installing a custom retractable 120-inch screen that disappears into the ceiling.

Natural solid wood is the material foundation, used to temper expansive coastal views with intimate warmth.

Project snapshot

Client brief and priorities

The brief was straightforward: make the most of the location and support the client's wellness lifestyle. Every important area—living, dining, kitchen, TV, gym, sauna and workspace—needed to face the ocean so the view would be available throughout the day. The design also had to feel personal and relatable to the clients, one Asian-born Australian and one South African, who both preferred solid timber.

Material and spatial approach

Nu Infinity anchored the scheme with natural timber as a primary material. The contrast between the open sea views and warm wood surfaces was used to produce intimacy within a large, open plan. Sliding glass partitions provide flexibility, allowing the front of the residence to remain open to the horizon while offering separation when required.

Two core design decisions and how they were resolved

1) Master bedroom relocation: The team proposed moving the master bedroom to the rear of the apartment. The reasoning was practical—at night the beachfront view becomes less relevant—while keeping the daytime-facing areas free for living and wellness. This move allowed the creation of a front-facing custom sauna that connects to the sea view through the gym, giving the wellness spaces direct visual access to Bondi.

Project highlights

The project's defining features are its choreography of daily life and the unusual combination of seaside living with a front-facing sauna and gym. The spatial layout was organised so the home adapts to the clients' routine rather than asking them to adapt to the space. The retractable screen and the sauna/gym sequence are singled out as favourite elements by the design team and client.

Rationale for awards entry and practice perspective

Nu Infinity has entered multiple local and international awards over the years. The practice views awards as milestones that motivate the team and reveal new talent. For Nu Infinity, being a finalist in the SBID Awards provides both recognition on an international platform and an internal measure of progress.

What this project communicates to other designers and clients

  • When a view is paramount, choose technical solutions (like a retractable screen) that maintain visual continuity.

Final note

The Bondi penthouse is an example of tailoring spatial decisions to both lifestyle and location: wood as a stabilising material, a plan that follows daily use, and technical interventions that protect the horizon while accommodating entertainment and wellness needs.
