# What happened Bank (AfDB) and AXIAN Group have launched a digital finance programme aimed at expanding access to finance and business support for more than 34,000 women-led enterprises in five African countries. The programme will be delivered through AXIAN's Mixx and MVola digital financial services platforms and supported by AfDB's AFAWA initiative and the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We‑Fi).
# Why it matters Africa has the highest rate of female entrepreneurship worldwide but faces a large financing gap for women entrepreneurs. The programme targets that gap by combining digital lending, mobile money and non-financial support so women can access capital, improve digital financial inclusion and grow formal business activity.
# What the programme does The initiative has two main components:
- Digital finance and tailored products: Targeting 34,000 women-led MSMEs in Madagascar, Tanzania and Senegal with digital lending, mobile money services and product features designed for women business owners.
- Skills and business support: Delivering financial literacy, digital skills and entrepreneurship training to 25,000 women across Madagascar, Tanzania, Senegal, Togo and Comoros.
Delivery will use alternative credit assessment methods to reach clients who lack traditional credit histories and will leverage mobile-enabled channels to increase reach among traditionally underserved entrepreneurs.
# Who is involved
- AXIAN Group: Implements the programme via its Mixx and MVola platforms and local operating companies across participating countries.
# Geographic scope and priorities Countries directly targeted for the digital finance rollout are Madagascar, Tanzania and Senegal. Training and digital inclusion activities will also run in Togo and Comoros.
Five stated priorities guide the programme:
- Expand access to digital finance for women-led businesses
- Strengthen financial and digital literacy
- Develop products tailored to women entrepreneurs
- Accelerate mobile-technology driven digital inclusion
- Support transition to the formal economy for women-owned businesses
# Implementation approach
# Expected outputs and connections Outputs include immediate access to tailored digital financial products for tens of thousands of women-led MSMEs and training for 25,000 women on finance and digital skills. The programme connects to AfDB's broader digital inclusion efforts and prior funding to AXIAN, aiming to scale technology-driven financial access.
# What to watch next Look for details on product design, enrolment processes, metrics for loan uptake and repayment, and how alternative credit scoring is operationalised. Country-level rollouts and partnerships with local agents will determine practical reach and uptake.
