Volontés review — a short, character-forward fantasy otome with strong writing and a few rough edges

Volontés starts with Fiena, a young survivor whose village and church were betrayed and burned. She survives and gains a new life by posing as a prophesied Moon Witch of a rival country. That setup drives a darker fantasy narrative that unfolds across four playable character routes.

Each route runs roughly four hours. The developer prioritizes quality over quantity: shorter routes with concentrated storytelling. The routes are interdependent—reveals in one can change later routes, and two routes must be unlocked after completing others. The game includes a simple story map and unlockable extras (CG gallery, epilogue short stories for each happy ending, music listening, and character profiles) to reward repeat playthroughs.

Although marketed as an otome, Volontés places more emphasis on worldbuilding, plot, and character development than on romance. Romance subplots are well written and emotionally satisfying when they appear, but they often sit in the background compared with the central story. Players who expect romance to dominate might find this emphasis surprising.

Artwork is attractive: character portraits, backdrops, and CGs receive praise. However, background variety is limited despite strong pieces, and some important named characters lack portraits. Fiena appears in only some CGs. The UI is simple and matches the fantasy tone. Voice acting and music are described as excellent, but Fiena is unvoiced, which some players may notice during key scenes.

The English script is well translated and grammatically sound. The default language is Japanese, and some UI elements remain untranslated by default, including the default name menu, opening credits, and certain endings. You can switch the script to English in settings, but the presence of untranslated text makes the English localization feel secondary and can be distracting.

Volontés delivers high-quality writing, memorable characters, and a compact, replayable structure. Presentation and localization quirks do not break the experience, but they are noticeable. The game is a good pick for players who prefer a darker fantasy narrative with meaningful routes over a romance-dominated otome.
