A cargo jet arriving from San Juan ran past the runway at Miami International around 2pm, crossed a road, struck vehicles and caught fire. Local officials say five people are dead and several others were hospitalized.
The cargo jet, operated by 21 Air, hit several vehicles after going around 1,500 ft beyond the end of the runway at about 2pm local time yesterday.
Flight data showed it was travelling at 112knots (129mph) when it left the end of the runway.
'It then crossed NW 67th Avenue, striking several vehicles before coming to rest in a car park outside an Amazon warehouse where the fire was extinguished.
On Sunday around 2pm local time, an Amazon-branded Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft operated by 21 Air overran runway 30 while landing at Miami International Airport (MIA). The flight had departed Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Local officials confirmed at least five people were killed. Reports give a total of five injured, with three people listed in critical condition and two others taken to hospitals with less severe injuries. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said 10 people were involved in the incident when combining fatalities and injured.
More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded. First crews found the aircraft on fire and worked to extinguish flames and remove and triage victims at the scene. Officials temporarily halted operations at one of the nation's busiest airports while emergency response and initial scene assessment continued.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava described the day as "very difficult" and confirmed the death toll and hospital transports. Miami-Dade rescue fire chief Ray Jadallah said the pilot and co-pilot were trapped in the cockpit as a result of the crash, according to a published report.
Amazon issued a message of condolence through spokesperson Kelly Nantel, saying the company was heartbroken by the fatalities and that it was working closely with local authorities and would cooperate with any investigation. The FAA confirmed it will investigate the incident.
The FAA has opened an inquiry into the runway overrun. Investigators will typically examine landing approach, runway remaining at touchdown, aircraft speed and configuration, crew actions, aircraft systems and maintenance records, and any ground hazards encountered after the aircraft left the paved surface. Local authorities will also handle the immediate scene and crash-casualty investigation.
Expect follow-up reporting to clarify exact causes, crew condition and identities, and final casualty counts. Airport operations may face delays or runway restrictions while the investigation and recovery proceed. The presence of vehicles on the roadway struck by the aircraft indicates civilian ground casualties are central to the incident's human toll.
