Your Biggest AI Search Risk: Conflicting Public Versions of Your Brand

AI-powered search can present a single, confident answer drawn from multiple public sources. When those sources preserve different, outdated, or inconsistent statements about your company, the AI will likely surface the version that best matches the user’s query vocabulary — not the current reality.

Useful takeaways from this story.

Publishing a new page can help but doesn’t guarantee correction if it doesn’t bridge old and new terminology.

This is a governance and retrieval problem as much as a content production problem.

The useful part

You cannot fix incorrect or outdated information in the LLMs by "simply" publishing more authoritative pages, adding more FAQs and comparison content, and explaining the product "one more time" but with feeling. In many cases where the information about a brand is outdated or wrong, the problem is not a lack of data. The problem is that the brand already has too many versions of the truth, and the version that best matches the user's question isn't current.

How it works

  • Traditional search could rank several of those pages simultaneously and leave the user to decide which one was current.
  • Now, AI search products retrieve sources and use them to construct a single answer.
  • It is a retrieval and content governance problem, and AI search has made it an SEO problem, too.
  • The system might rewrite the question a little or run several related searches, but it is still trying to answer the question it was given.
  • That matters when the question contains an assumption the user does not know is outdated.

What to take from it

Others were perfectly accurate when they were published, but that was three years ago and no longer describes the company today. The result is that the old answer will win because it matches the language of the question. This is why the problem is more complicated than just updating an About page.

Example or evidence

  • The goal is to find the evidence chain producing the answer, not to bury it under another freshly published page.
  • Sometimes the strongest content strategy is fixing the old content you forgot you published.
  • The prompt itself contains an obsolete organizational model.
  • Do not assume users know the new name well enough to search for it.

Details worth keeping

Product documentation uses language the marketing team abandoned two years ago. Executive biographies preserve titles that no longer exist. Partner pages describe features that have changed.

AI or SI?

One of the leading ski holiday booking companies, Iglu, say that the number of skiers using AI tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini to research where to go has nearly quadrupled over the past 12 months, growing from 2.2% last year to 8.7% in 2026.
