What happened this summer
Kadampa Meditation Center Seville and Kadampa Meditation Center Albacete ran a series of retreats in August aimed at deepening students' practical understanding of Buddha's teachings. The events combined formal teachings, guided meditations, community pujas, and time in nature.
KMC Seville: Like a Summer Dream
KMC Seville organised an away retreat called "Like a Summer Dream" at KMC Spain in Malaga. The retreat focused on the Buddhist view of emptiness. Gen Kelsang Trime provided sustained, practical instruction on the true nature of the body, the self, and other phenomena, and led meditations intended to shift how participants perceived their everyday experience.
The teaching aimed to show how mistaken perceptions of independent, inherent existence give rise to worries and fears, and how a correct understanding of emptiness opens the door to greater peace and happiness. On Protector Day, Gen-la Kelsang Dekyong unexpectedly attended and presided over the Wishfulfilling Jewel with Tsog puja, offering blessing and support to retreatants.
KMC Albacete: A Peaceful Getaway and Urban Retreat
KMC Albacete held a weekend retreat at Colonia Sahuco Lodge under the title "Awaken Your Inner Light." Guided by Resident Teacher Gen Kelsang Rigma, the retreat emphasized refuge in the Three Jewels and practices inspired by the Lamrim and the International Summer Festival at Manjushri. Participants worked on abandoning the three faults and practicing the six recognitions in a quiet, natural setting.
What participants experienced and learned
Participants across both centres engaged with a mix of contemplative instruction and meditation practice. The retreats offered:
- Direct instruction on emptiness framed for everyday application.
- Communal rituals (for example, the Tsog puja) that marked important practice days and created shared support.
Attendees reported opportunities to question habitual ways of seeing and to explore a wiser, calmer perspective toward personal worries.
Practical takeaways for readers
If you want to evaluate similar retreats for yourself, consider these points:
- Retreat focus: Are you seeking study of a philosophical topic (such as emptiness) or a practice retreat emphasizing meditation and silence?
- Teacher and format: Note whether an experienced resident teacher or visiting teacher leads the program and whether sessions mix instruction, meditation, and group rituals.
- Setting: Weekend nature retreats and urban retreats offer different conditions for applying teachings—choose what will help you maintain attention and reflection.
