ASML starts building a second Eindhoven campus that could hold 20,000 workplaces

Construction has begun on ASML’s new Brainport Industries Campus North. The first phase opens in 2029 for 3,000 staff; longer-term expansion depends on demand for chip machinery.

First phase due 2029: facilities for at least 3,000 staff combining production, logistics and offices.

Project followed a 2024 government package of €2.5 billion for regional infrastructure and services to keep ASML in the Netherlands.

What happened

ASML has started construction on a second industrial campus in Eindhoven's Brainport region. The site, called Brainport Industries Campus North (BIC North), is near Eindhoven Airport and the A58 motorway. ASML says the first buildings will open in 2029.

What the campus will be

ASML plans a phased development that could eventually cover about 350,000 square metres and provide space for as many as 20,000 workplaces. The first phase will house at least 3,000 staff and will combine production, logistics and offices in a single location.

The company says the new campus will include a "flow factory," a production line for lithography machines modelled on approaches used in the automotive and aerospace industries. That indicates ASML intends to adopt serialised, continuous-production practices for parts of its manufacturing.

Jobs and staffing

In January, ASML announced 1,700 job cuts, mostly in the Netherlands, despite reporting a record year. The new campus plan and those earlier reductions are separate items in ASML's ongoing operational planning.

Political and regional context

Prime Minister Rob Jetten attended a ceremony at the site. Eindhoven city council approved the zoning plan for the development in March.

The national government previously offered a financial package to encourage ASML to expand in the Netherlands rather than abroad. In 2024 the government pledged €2.5 billion to fund housing, roads, education and power grid upgrades in the region to support the company's growth.

Why ASML is building now

The campus gives ASML room to scale production and logistics capacity in phases. The company also has commercial and technical reasons to concentrate functions—production, logistics and offices—in one location to improve coordination for complex lithography machine assembly.

What to watch next

  • Decisions about later phases tied to order books and demand for advanced lithography machines.
  • Local infrastructure upgrades and housing delivery tied to the €2.5 billion government package.
  • How the 'flow factory' approach affects ASML's throughput and unit costs for its machines.
