How to stop automatic subtitles in iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27

What automatic subtitles do

In iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate, videos played with Apple's video player (Photos, Safari and many other apps and sites) can show transcribed subtitles automatically. The system shows them when the video is in another language, when audio is muted, or when you rewind playback. If those automatic captions are distracting, you can disable them quickly for a single playback, for one app, or across all apps.

Turn off subtitles for the current video

1. 1While the video is playing on iPhone, iPad or Mac, tap the captions icon on the playback controls.
2. 2Tap Off to stop subtitles for this video. That choice will also stop subtitles for future playbacks in the same app unless you change the app-level or system-level settings.

If you want captions but prefer a different display or language, use the same captions icon to change language and styling instead of turning captions off.

Turn off automatic subtitles across the device

1. 1Open Settings on iPhone or iPad, or System Settings on Mac.
2. 2Go to Accessibility.
3. 3Choose Subtitles & Captioning.
4. 4Under Automatic Subtitles, turn off the first three options:

• Match — prevents automatic translated subtitles when the video audio is in another language.

Make the change apply across apps or keep per-app control

There's an Apply across apps toggle in the same Subtitles & Captioning settings. If you turn it on, disabling or enabling automatic subtitles in one app (for example, Photos) will also disable or enable them in all other apps. If Apply across apps is off, subtitle behavior is managed per app and you can allow captions in some apps while blocking them in others.

If captions still appear

Re-enable captions when you want them

If you change your mind, you can re-enable automatic subtitles through Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning or tap the captions icon during playback to turn captions back on for that video or app. You can also use the captions icon to switch subtitle language or change the subtitle style without touching system settings.

Quick checklist

• For one-time suppression: tap the captions icon during playback and select Off.
• To stop automatic captions for all apps: Settings/System Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning > turn off the first three Automatic Subtitles options.
