Photoshop's beta now includes a Refine Edge feature intended to remove fringing — the colored halo that appears around hair or fine edges after you cut a subject out with Remove Background. The feature is available when you click a layer mask in the beta, but it consumes 20 generative credits each time you run it.
Remove Background (the standard command) produces a clean mask at no credit cost. The halo appears only after you place the subject over a new background or change background colors — for example, switching text behind hair to black will reveal leftover sky color or other fringing. Refine Edge addresses that halo directly but charges the credit whether the result is satisfactory or not.
Aaron Nace's walkthough in the Photoshop beta shows the full sequence: duplicate the background layer, run Remove Background, place new background elements behind the subject, then invoke Refine Edge on the mask. Nace points out that Refine Edge leaves the original intact and creates a separate result layer, which lets you compare outcome to the original.
Nace demonstrates a manual approach that costs nothing and depends on long-standing Photoshop techniques:
- Create a new layer above the masked layer and clip it to the subject so painting affects only the subject.
- Reduce brush flow to about 10 percent and paint small circles along the glowing edge until the halo disappears.
- Use a slightly darker sampled tone to handle deeper shadowed areas.
Darken mode only replaces pixels that are lighter than what you paint, which removes a bright halo while preserving darker hair strands. The same principle appears in dodging/burning, skin work, and color grading.
Refine Edge can speed the cleanup workflow, and for some users the time saved may justify the credits. However, the manual painting technique uses clipping masks, blend modes, and low-flow brushwork that are available in every version of Photoshop and cost nothing. Understanding those tools means you can fix hair fringing without consuming credits or relying on a single new feature.
