Where the A2L Transition Exposes Install Shortcuts The refrigerant transition is putting new pressure on old installation habits By Paolo Weston Courtesy of Eakrin. stock.adobe.com NO MERCY: A2L equipment is less forgiving of poor airflow, inaccurate charging, and off-spec installations, putting greater emphasis on getting the entire changeout right.
How it works
- A manometer on a typical R-22-era changeout candidate often shows total external static outside the new equipment's rating, on ductwork that was never sized for it.
- Reconnecting to an existing line set without verifying its length, condition, and cleanliness is how a brand-new system starts life a half pound off.

What to take from it
The third habit surfaces the latest, and it is the one that quietly puts a homeowner's warranty at risk. 31, because they were already doing what the A2L equipment now requires. September 11, 2026 The move to A2L refrigerants reads, on paper, like a swap.

- It is exposing install shortcuts that R-410A quietly tolerated for two decades.
- That is most visible in hot, humid markets where most of the older housing stock was built and ducted for R-22, then converted to R-410A one box at a time, often without anyone touching the duct system.
- Those homes are now due for their next changeout, and the A2L equipment going in is far less forgiving of what it inherits.
Details worth keeping
In the field, though, the transition is doing something less obvious. Under the EPA rule that took effect January 1, 2025, newly manufactured residential air conditioners and heat pumps have to use a refrigerant under a 700 GWP limit, which in practice means the A2L refrigerants R-454B and R-32. R-410A equipment built before that date can still be installed for now, and existing R-410A systems keep running and getting serviced.
