Alfie Hewett wins fifth US Open wheelchair singles; Neal Skupski secures men's doubles crown

Alfie Hewett regained the US Open wheelchair singles title with a straight-sets victory over Tokito Oda, winning 6-0, 7-6 (7-5). The 28-year-old produced a dominant first set and held off a strong challenge in the second to deny Oda, 20, a calendar Grand Slam. Hewett had lost to Oda in the French Open and Wimbledon finals earlier in the season.

Hewett's week also included a doubles victory with partner Gordon Reid, secured the day before. That made the singles win part of a broader successful campaign in New York for the British pair.

In the men's doubles final, Britain's Neal Skupski and American partner Christian Harrison beat Germany's Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). Skupski had been runner-up at the US Open twice before and called the title a particularly emotional achievement.

For Skupski, the doubles win closes a chapter of near-misses at Flushing Meadows. He finished runner-up in 2022 with Wesley Koolhof and last year with Joe Salisbury. The new partnership with Christian Harrison produced a straight-sets win in the final and a long-awaited major title at the US Open for Skupski.
