# Cardiff Rugby: URC 2026-27 preview — aims, strengths and what to watch
Cardiff enter 2026-27 on the back of their best URC finish since 2011. Sixth place last season secured a spot in the European Champions Cup and raised expectations going into the club's 150th anniversary year.
Where Cardiff stand now
Defensively Cardiff are reliable. They posted an 81% tackle success rate and finished fifth for turnovers won. Individually, Dan Thomas (263 tackles) and Alun Lawrence (244) ranked among the competition's top tacklers.
Offensively there is room to grow. Cardiff recorded the second-fewest offloads in the league last season (79), which limited their ability to stretch defences and create second-phase opportunities. Their kicking game, however, is prolific — they kicked 572 times in open play last season, an average of about 30 kicks per game — meaning territory and tactical kicking are central to their approach.
Squad changes and the immediate effect
Key signings listed for the new season include Le Roux Malan, Scott Sio, Semisi Paea and Jarrod Evans. Those additions should bolster front‑row strength, midfield options and playmaking depth. Departures include Ben Donnell, Corey Domachowski and several academy or fringe players released or transferred.
Jarrod Evans returns to the Arms Park after three seasons away, bringing experience at fly-half. Scott Sio's arrival should add power in the scrum and carry, addressing forward platform needs that can help create cleaner ball for backs and reduce reliance on kicking.
Players to focus on
- Dan Thomas: The club's Players' Player of the Season and defensive linchpin. His work-rate and tackle numbers underpin Cardiff's defensive identity. Despite being 32, he remains central to how Cardiff defend and compete at breakdown.
- Tom Bowen: Recognised as the URC Next-Gen Player of the Season, Bowen offers pace and line-breaking threat. Opponents will need plans for his running game.
- Jarrod Evans: Back at Cardiff, he will be expected to manage territory, kicking and attacking tempo while linking the forward platform to backline play.
Coaching and support staff
Van Zyl's coaching group blends recent retirees and specialists. Leigh Halfpenny has joined as kicking coach following retirement, Gethin Jenkins will oversee defence, and Dan Bowden arrives as attack coach with prior international experience. Those appointments aim to target specific weaknesses — kicking technique, defensive cohesion and attacking structures.
Outlook for the season
What to watch early in the season
- Integration of Scott Sio and Jarrod Evans into starting combinations.
- Whether Tom Bowen's influence grows in key fixtures and European matches.
- Changes in attacking metrics: offloads, line breaks and points scored compared with last season.
- Home form at Cardiff Arms Park during the early derby block of matches.
