Seeing all the videos of him scuttling around Seattle put me in the mood for cryptid horror books.

How it works

• The idea that it's the work of a particularly vicious bear is floated, but what bear could haul a corpse into a tree?
• The whole thing might seem a bit silly on the (hairy) face of it, but it ends up working because Max Brooks commits to a sincere tone throughout.
• So when three hunters show up to track down a cryptid—probably searching for whatever animal mutilated the fox that Mattie recently found in the snow—things quickly spiral into chaos.
• Near the Bone employs the Jaws -style technique of not showing—or, in this case, describing—the monster too much for most of the story, which keeps that terrifying fear of the unknown alive.
• The novella follows Addy, who is slowly reclaiming her life after divorcing her overbearing husband.

What to take from it

Strictly speaking, they're animals whose existence haven't been officially confirmed by science (but some people also count supernatural creatures too). The five horror novels below are filled with cryptids—some of which have been conjured up out of the authors' imaginations and others which will be familiar to real-world cryptozoologists. Either way, you're guaranteed plenty of teeth, claws, and bloodshed… Crota by Owl Goingback Sheriff Skip Harding has it pretty easy in Logan, Missouri—the little town isn't exactly a hotbed of crime.
