The useful part

Take japa as the mainstay of our practice of devotional service, and take time to settle into it. There is maybe a warm-up period where it takes some time to get momentum, to get the mind back on track after sleeping. Sometimes the mind is elsewhere, or we may have things that are troubling us.

How it works

  • We have fears that something is going to happen, but those can be overcome by getting on the train of soundâ€"it's coming, and we create itâ€"and then we take time to settle in.
  • Once we are on that train, we can hear the boxcars going over the rails: clackety-clack, clack, clack......and we're rolling along.
  • Then we can stay on that train as long as possible and keep the sound vibration going.
  • Every day, if we continue that sÄdhana, then that will become the place where we take shelter.
  • Just in my mind, I can stay on the train, no matter what else is happening.

What to take from it

If one can experience even for a secondâ€"fearlessness: "I'm not afraid because I'm not my body, and I'm the eternal servant of Kṛṣṇa, and what's more, I'm taking shelter of Kṛṣṇa, despite my present condition. I'm performing my duties, but still my mind is absorbed in that sense of protection by the Supreme Lord. My internal state is that I only have Kṛṣṇa as my shelter." That is the means by which one may live out this life of corporeal existence, embodied existence, and be liberated at the same time.

Details worth keeping

Then throughout the day, we can remember: get back on the train.
