Geoff Parling’s Tigers reached last season’s Premiership semi-finals. New signings strengthen the pack, but can Leicester convert progress into a final appearance?

Geoff Parling enters his second season after guiding Leicester to 12 league wins and a Premiership semi-final.
Front-row additions Mako Vunipola and Joel Sclavi, plus back-row Aaron Wainwright, beef up the pack.
Ollie Chessum is central to Leicester’s ambitions as captain and primary ball-carrier.
Leicester Tigers improved under Geoff Parling in 2025-26, winning 12 league games and reaching the Premiership semi-final where they lost to Northampton Saints. The club has recruited several experienced forwards and reworked its coaching staff. The team looks like play-off material, but the preview argues they may need another year to make the final.
The Tigers targeted the pack in recruitment. Incoming forwards include Wales back-row Aaron Wainwright, loosehead Mako Vunipola, Argentine prop Joel Sclavi, and locks and back-row cover such as Elliot Stooke and Jack Doorey-Palmer. Those additions are intended to replace key departures: Nicky Smith left for Sale Sharks, George Martin moved to Saracens, and Hanro Liebenberg, among others, also departed. James O'Connor was released.
Captain Ollie Chessum is the central figure. He stepped into the leadership role smoothly and provides physical ball-carrying, defensive aggression, and reliable lineout work. The preview highlights Chessum's emotional investment in the team after the semi-final exit and describes him as a player with few obvious weaknesses.
Replacing influential forwards who left, and integrating several senior recruits, is a short-term challenge. Squad cohesion under the revised coaching team will be tested early in the season. The preview suggests Parling's culture and Welford Road familiarity give Leicester a strong base, but it may take another season of development to reach a final.
Rugby World's view: play-off material. Leicester are expected to contend for the top four but might need more time under Parling to push through to a Premiership final. The combination of an improving squad, experienced signings, and targeted coaching hires makes them a credible challenger in 2026-27, particularly at home.
Signings: Aaron Wainwright, Mako Vunipola, Joel Sclavi, Elliot Stooke, Jack Doorey-Palmer, Joe Jenkins.
Departures: Nicky Smith, Harry Wells, Hanro Liebenberg, George Martin, James O'Connor, Izaia Perese, plus several loan moves and releases.
Leicester Tigers look stronger up front and remain a top-four proposition. Success will depend on integrating new forwards, how quickly the revamped coaching group lands its ideas, and Chessum continuing to drive the team on and off the field.
