We're a quarter of the way through the 2026 season, which gives enough on-field sample to evaluate ACC teams beyond preseason rankings or recruiting hype. This week's snapshot ranks teams largely on results and the early trends revealed through three games.
Top of the conference: Miami, Louisville, Duke
- 1Miami Hurricanes (3-0, 2-0)
Miami has the top spot after three wins and two conference victories. The offense features two standout players mentioned as Heisman contenders. The staff has managed to win despite multiple injuries to starters, particularly in the backfield and secondary. Miami is the heavy betting favorite to reach the playoffs and pursue the program's first ACC championship. Last week: 33-20 win at Wake Forest. Next: Central Michigan (home).
- 1Louisville Cardinals (2-1, 1-0)
Louisville's most recent win came against SMU, where they pulled away in the fourth quarter. The offense looks strong, with Isaac Brown highlighted as a top running back in the conference and Lincoln Kienholz praised for his quarterback play. Questions remain about the defense. Next: Wake Forest.
- 1Duke Blue Devils (3-0, 1-0)
Middle tier: Virginia Tech, SMU, Pittsburgh
- 1Virginia Tech Hokies (3-0, 0-0)
James Franklin's first season at Virginia Tech opens with an undefeated non-conference slate. Penn State transfers are leading the offense: QB Ethan Grunkemeyer has an 86.4 QBR (13th nationally at the time of reporting) and TE Luke Reynolds is a top target. The Hokies head into conference play at Boston College.
- 1SMU Mustangs (2-1, 1-1)
SMU showed they can match top ACC teams but turnovers derailed a late-game comeback at Louisville. The team is talented and remains in playoff conversation if it cuts down mistakes, with a potential upset of Notre Dame noted as a season-defining opportunity. Next: Missouri State.
- 1Pittsburgh Panthers (3-0, 1-0)
Pitt is unbeaten and features a particularly strong defense that held UCF and Syracuse to 20 combined points. The offense has been inconsistent, and the schedule provides a chance to tune it up against lower-tier competition. Next: Bucknell.
Lower-but-watchful: Virginia, Wake Forest
- 1Virginia Cavaliers (2-1, 1-0)
Virginia started with a convincing win over NC State but then lost to West Virginia. The result raises the same questions as last season about losing to middling opposition. This week's opponent is Delaware before a tougher test at Florida State.
- 1Wake Forest Demon Deacons (2-1, 0-1)
