How three recent films rework famous literature — praise, bafflement, and where adaptation fails

A reader compares Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Arun Matheswaran’s DC, and Shyam Benegal’s Nishant to explain how each film uses famous texts: as springboard, as name-drop, or as meaningful revision.

Useful takeaways from this story.

Benegal’s Nishant is presented as a model of literary subversion that shifts the viewer’s perspective on an epic through careful character setup, moral ambiguity, and refusal of easy catharsis.

The useful part

Literature and Cinema Posted on September 22, 2026 6 By Aman Basha Ruminations on three films and their respective relationships with popular works of literature. It seems the second week of August 2026 would forever exist in my memory as the week where I sat for two movies of a strangely similar nature. Both these movies prominently cited famous works of literature, only to use this literature as less source material and more a springboard to dive into their filmmakers' pet obsessions.

How it works

  • I am not as familiar with Homer to offer thoughts on Nolan's interpretation of literature, but a bafflement and passion similar to Watson's ran over me when I sat myself through Arun Matheswaran's DC.
  • Arun Mathewaran here seeks to draw a parallel between a sloshed gangster and a sex worker teaming up like Bonnie and Clyde to Devadas and Chandramukhi.
  • I have far more contempt for the right wing than I express in public and even I couldn't help but scoff at how the one policeman with some conscience in the narrative happens to be a Muslim.
  • This was a hattrick of watching films that were all, in some form, subversions of popular, iconic works of literature.
  • The ominous score is an early sign, and the priest's look of desperation and horror soon reveal to us that in this world, nothing is sacred.

What to take from it

While a weakling, Viswam is the subject of unusual affection and attention by Anna. The first of these movies was Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, whose relation to Homer has already been subject to some strongly worded articles by Homer translator Emily Watson. The novella has spawned many adaptations and interpretations over the ages that have taken Sarat's characters in wild directions, but DC is in a league of its own.

Example or evidence

  • Arun Matheswaran instead constructs a narrative that is far too convenient and simplistic, when compared to the literature it frequently references.
  • I have no idea of brothels, but it was baffling to see a brothel without a madam or with all women as victims.
  • Of course, anything else would be an inconvenience for the interval stretch where the operating structure of this brothel is massacred for an aroused audience.
  • At the end of this second week, right on time for a celebration of India's independence (12th or 80th is up to the reader to discern), I sat myself down for a long due film viewing.

Details worth keeping

It took little time to realize that I was on the verge of completing a hattrick. The third film in this hattrick, however, emphasized to me how well The Odyssey captured the futility of war and violence with its similar plot beats of a woman as an excuse for an invasion through a trojan horse-like religious procession. It also exposed how poor the relationship between DC and Devdas was.
