# What changed
# How the zoom increase works
The Luna Ultra pairs a 1-inch main camera (20mm equiv., f/1.8) with a 1/1.3-inch telephoto module (60mm equiv., f/2.0). At launch the telephoto module offered 6x lossless zoom (120mm equiv.) and a 12x max (240mm equiv.). The firmware lifts the ceiling to 15x, which Insta360 labels as 300mm equivalent.
Optically nothing in the sensor or glass changed. Zoom beyond the 6x lossless point is digital cropping of the 1/1.3-inch telephoto sensor. Insta360 says its dual imaging chips plus an AI remosaic process reconstruct detail to retain definition at higher magnifications. That is a manufacturer claim about processed detail rather than a change in native optical resolution. The gimbal stabilizes framing at 300mm, but the visible pixel-level detail should be checked on a proper monitor before relying on those shots.
# Ultra Telephoto Lens: what it adds
# Stage Mode explained
Stage Mode is aimed at concerts, festivals and theater where there are foreground lights, crowd movement and strobing. It bundles several adjustments:
- Face-specific filtering and altered focus sensitivity to avoid locking onto bright objects like glow sticks between the shooter and performer.
- Exposure logic that suppresses highlights more aggressively with face-weighted metering.
- Separate white balance and color handling to retain the look of saturated stage lighting instead of letting it smear.
Insta360 also includes tracking and audio adjustments for performance shooting. These changes target real-world shooting behavior in low-light, high-contrast, and dynamic lighting environments.
# Other notes
The firmware also adds 4K vertical video, useful for social and short-form platforms. Insta360 recommends shooting telephoto results at 4K30 for best outcome. The firmware is free and installs via the Insta360 app. The update arrived slightly more than three months after the Luna Ultra's launch at Leica's Wetzlar headquarters.
# Practical takeaways
If you need more reach for sports, stage or wildlife and can accept heavier digital crop beyond lossless zoom, try the 15x setting but verify results on a monitor. If you want real optical reach without changing sensors, the 1.5x Ultra Telephoto Lens gives a meaningful boost to 450mm equivalent. Use Stage Mode for crowded, strobing live events where face-weighted exposure and adjusted focus behavior matter.
