Artisanal Technology and Mechanical Brides: Ursula M. Franklin’s The Real World of Technology

A practical brief on Franklin’s argument that technology is a social practice—organized work, mindset, and procedures—and how the distinction between artisanal (holistic) and prescriptive technologies shapes power, freedom, and everyday life.

Useful takeaways from this story.

Technology is more than machines: Franklin defines it as organized practices, procedures, symbols, words, equations, and a mindset that shape social relations.

Two models of practice matter: holistic (artisanal, end-to-end, variable quality) versus prescriptive (process-fragmented, consistent output, worker fungibility).

Prescriptive systems scale control: authorities and institutions convert work into prescriptive processes to make people and places more legible and manageable.

The useful part

Franklin's The Real World of Technology Exploring how tech and engineering interact with power, belief, and structures of freedom and control. Every couple weeks, we'll dive into a book, article, or other source of ideas that are sparking current stories, or that have untapped potential to do so. Each article will include an overview of the source(s), a review of its readability and plausibility, and highlights of the best two or three "seeds" found there.

How it works

  • Franklin was both an engineer and a student of humanity, and this is an underappreciated classic about how technology actually works in society.
  • Everyone writing speculative technology should consider her framework for how nice clean engineering interacts with power, belief, and structures of freedom and control.
  • Smart people make discoveries, then figure out how to apply them to regular use.
  • Prescriptive practices,, break down work by process, giving each contributor an easily-repeatable step.
  • The end result is consistent (at whatever quality has been optimized for) and the workers fungible.

What to take from it

This section feels more dated, largely because patterns that she attributes to TV's one-way communication have continued into the age of the internet. Returning to community, Franklin warns that we tend to focus on what new techniques could do to address existing problems, at the cost of considering what kinds of activities they may prevent or reshape. Her caring is informed by feminist theory and socialism (as they stood in the '80s), without being overwhelmed by them.

Example or evidence

  • These are the questions that Franklin set out to address in her 1989 CBC Massey lectures, which were published as a book in 1990 and updated with additional material in 1999.
  • Those who gain power through these systems, in turn, use that power to build systems that further increase their control.
  • One of my ongoing obsessions is the neglect of technology's psychological side.
  • They turn biology into medicine, physics into microchips, and statistical calculation into a pop-up offering to summarize your mom's five-line email.

AI Made Easy: Becoming Your Own Handyman (Sort Of)

My washer stopped working the other day. No error message, no clear explanation. Just a machine that wasn't doing its job anymore. Years ago, this would have meant a phone call, a service appointment, and a wait. Instead, I opened the washing machine door, found the metal label with the model and serial numbers, and to

Artificial Feminist Intelligence Is Not Feminism

Despite the fact that AI seems to be everywhere these days, a surprising recent poll from NBC News found that AI is even less popular among the US public than ICE. So it is no wonder the same industry that is developing AI for corporate gain and warfare is moving into the seemingly benevolent fields of reproductive hea
