Wednesday Bible Study: Vegetarians are wimps

I regret that I haven't been blogging regularly lately, except for keeping up with the Bible reading, because but I'll get back to it. Frankly, I've been so gobsmacked by the insanity of the present moment that I haven't felt as though I had anything worthwhile to say that wasn't obvious.

The useful part

I regret that I haven't been blogging regularly lately, except for keeping up with the Bible reading, because but I'll get back to it. Frankly, I've been so gobsmacked by the insanity of the present moment that I haven't felt as though I had anything worthwhile to say that wasn't obvious. No manuscripts exist that can reasonably be dated before about the year 200.

How it works

  • The best evidence is that no text of the New Testament was written before 100, and what we have today as Paul's epistles were not written until somewhere around the middle of the second century.
  • Now, that doesn't mean they couldn't have been based in part on oral tradition, but it does mean I've probably been giving too much credit to the historicity of what we've been reading, in both Acts and Romans.
  • Paul doesn't want us to judge people even if the do things he thinks are foolish or wrong.
  • 14 Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters.
  • 2 One person's faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables.

What to take from it

3 The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them.

Details worth keeping

Now, an important point about all these epistles. Paul starts off by equating vegetarianism with weak face. 4 Who are you to judge someone else's servant?
