# What Bungie announced
# December: Symbiosis and new systems
Symbiosis update will deliver several concrete additions:
- Marathon's first true, permanent PvE mode. Details are still being finalized, but the mode is explicitly planned for December.
- An experimental deathmatch mode intended as a "direct, lower-commitment way to sharpen your skills and compete without putting a full run at risk." Bungie will use player engagement with this experiment to inform future competitive offerings.
- A new shell called Bishop, described as "Marathon's high-performance robot samurai" built around speed, ambush, and "devastating bursts of melee damage."
- A social space that includes a firing range for testing guns and shells and for meeting other runners in a non-deadly environment.
- Visual overhaul of the starting zone Perimeter, additional paths to acquire high-end loot on the map, and the game's largest boss fight yet against a large alien Tick Queen.
These December changes follow a smaller Nightfall refresh that Bungie describes as a more targeted update.
# March 2027: A broader evolution
Bungie frames the March 2027 update as the point where various pieces of Marathon come together into a "much larger evolution" for the shooter. The studio teases a set of planned systems and changes:
- An interconnected system of PvE, PvP, and PvEvP modes meant to reward different ways of playing.
- A new onboarding experience to reduce early confusion for new players.
- Changes to progression and the Cradle system.
- More focused questlines and new narratives.
- A completely new zone to explore and new alien combatants (Bungie notes Pfhor will appear, possibly evolved since the original Marathon trilogy).
Bungie did not release full details for March, saying parts are still being finalized.
# Marathon
Bungie acknowledges the game didn't meet its reach expectations. Senior Marathon design lead Kevin Yanes said the team "built very much an extraction shooter as you've ever seen one" and that the title's "constant loop of failure" didn't connect with enough players. The announced changes aim to offer options for players who want shorter, lower-pressure sessions, more direct competitive play, build testing, longer cooperative nights, or deeper single-player-style PvE.
# What to watch next
- How players respond to the December deathmatch experiment and the new social space.
- Specifics of the permanent PvE mode and the new zone teased for March 2027.
- The scope of progression and Cradle changes and whether onboarding reduces friction for new runners.
- Whether the addition of Pfhor or other new alien combatants changes Marathon's tone back toward the franchise's earlier entries.
Bungie ends the update with a clear message: Marathon will continue to receive major content and systemic changes across late 2026 and into early 2027 as the studio adapts the game to reach a wider audience.
