What this event is

Laws, Panjab University, is organizing the 5th Prof. (Dr.) Anil Kumar Thakur Memorial National Debate Competition on October 30–31, 2026. The competition is held in memory of Prof. (Dr.) Anil Kumar Thakur and is run by the Prof. (Dr.) Anil Kumar Thakur Debating Society, founded in 2022.

Who can participate

Team entry and registration

Entries are accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. The registration form must be sealed and signed by the competent authority and submitted along with the payment receipt. Participants are advised to arrive at least one hour before the event begins. The registration deadline is October 20, 2026.

The fee is non-refundable under any circumstance.

Competition structure and timings

The event runs over two days with the following progression:

After both speakers have finished, judges or panels may ask questions or permit rebuttal for up to three minutes, subject to the jury's permission. Detailed round-wise rules will be shared at venue registration.

Evaluation criteria

Individual scoring is out of 50 marks and team scoring out of 100. The parameters are:

  • Content Quality: 10 marks
  • Knowledge of Subject: 10 marks
  • Confidence: 5 marks
  • Command on Language: 5 marks
  • Time Management: 5 marks
  • Question and Answer: 5 marks
  • Dress Code and Conduct: 10 marks

Judges may pose questions after speeches and will apply these criteria across rounds.

Prizes and certificates

Total cash prizes advertised amount to Rs. 16,000 distributed as:

  • Winners: Rs. 6,500, trophy and certificate (team total determines winners)
  • Runners-Up: Rs. 3,500, trophy and certificate
  • Best Team (prelim performance): Rs. 3,500, trophy and certificate
  • Best Debater (individual across rounds): Rs. 2,500, trophy and certificate

Participation certificates will be issued to those who attend their allocated and final rounds. Ties will be resolved through a tie-breaker disclosed at venue registration.
