Rome to host major Marina Abramović exhibition

The useful part

Historical Works and Transforming Energy opens on 18 November and runs until 4 April 2027 at the gallery in Viale delle Belle Arti. A section titled Historical Works, curated by Andrea Tarsia, features some of her best-known performance pieces, including Imponderabilia (1977), Balkan Baroque (1997) and The Artist Is Present (2010). Abramović describes the resulting interaction as a process of "energy transmission".

How it works

• The show will open with The Artist Is Present and Rhythm 0, two works separated by 35 years, with the rest of the historical section arranged thematically rather than chronologically.
• Notably, this is the first Abramović exhibition she has not curated herself, something she has welcomed as a chance to see her own work "through someone else's eyes".

What to take from it
