Franchise appeal centers on a limited menu, a roughly 1,000-square-foot footprint, modest equipment needs and lower labor requirements.

HB Protein Smoothies was founded by Daniel and Ethan Boone to offer a thicker, protein-forward smoothie intended to compete with brands such as Smoothie King, Tropical Smoothie Cafe and Jamba. The concept currently operates two corporate locations and one franchised store. Since launching franchising about six months ago, HB's development pipeline has grown to more than 250 locations across the United States and into Canada. Why experienced operators signed on Several of HB's early franchise agreements were with seasoned multi-unit operators. Those partners cited the brand's compact store model and operational simplicity as the primary draws. Commonly mentioned attributes include a limited menu, roughly 1,000-square-foot store footprints, inexpensive and straightforward equipment needs, and labor requirements that are lower than many full-service or larger fast-casual formats.

  • Bob Morris, who owns 19 7 Brew locations and previously held significant Planet Fitness assets before selling to a private-equity firm, signed a six-unit development deal for South Florida. Morris said he was impressed by the product and the clean, simple operation and expects to open his first HB location within about 90 days. His six-unit commitment is the brand's fourth multi-unit Florida signing since franchising began.
  • John Oswald, CEO of Capital Trust Group with experience working alongside brands such as Wolfgang Puck Company, Panera and P.F. Chang's, agreed to develop five to 10 locations in the greater Fort Myers market. He cited the small footprint and modest equipment needs in his decision.
  • John Hanford, a 20-year transportation executive turned business owner, signed a deal to develop units in the Pensacola area, aiming to begin openings next year.
  • Jay and Caroline Orosa committed to HB's first international development agreement in Canada.
  • Chris Phillips, president of Smooth Papas and a member of the longest-tenured Papa Murphy's franchise family, teamed with partners Ed Holmes and Jim and Brandon Lovelace on a deal to open at least 12 locations across Arizona, Idaho and Oregon. Phillips, who has personal experience with fitness and bodybuilding, sees protein-based offerings as mainstream and expects broader consumer demand.
