UK digital bank Monzo is described in recent reporting as weighing three strategic options: sell itself to Brazil's Nubank (Nu Holdings), raise a new funding round that targets a valuation above £8 billion, or sell a significant minority stake (around 15%) to private equity to fund expansion. Discussions with Nubank are said to be at an early stage.
Monzo's latest annual report lists more than 15 million customers and 10.4 million active users, with nearly half using Monzo as their primary bank. The firm secured a full European banking licence through the Central Bank of Ireland in December 2025 and launched services in Ireland in April 2026. At launch in Ireland, Monzo had roughly 100,000 people on a waitlist.
Monzo has appointed Morgan Stanley and Qatalyst as financial advisers as it considers the options. Sky News and the Financial Times report that Nubank has approached Monzo about a combination that could value Monzo between £8 billion and £10 billion. Nu Holdings, Nubank's parent, is reported to have a market capitalisation in the region of $65.5 billion.
The second route Monzo is considering is a fundraising round aimed at a valuation above £8 billion to support wider European expansion. The third reported option is negotiating with private equity firms to sell up to around 15% of the business to raise cash without a full sale.
Monzo has been reshaping its focus. The bank announced it would close its US operations to concentrate on markets closer to home. The company continues to scale in Europe: it plans to double its Dublin headcount to about 70 employees by mid‑2027 and currently employs 5,275 people overall, with offices in Dublin, London, Cardiff and Barcelona.
Shortly before these reports appeared, Monzo's EU CEO, Michael Carney, announced he would step down to start a new venture in AI accessibility.
Reports describe talks as early-stage. Monzo's immediate next steps, according to the coverage, include working with Morgan Stanley and Qatalyst to evaluate offers and fundraising options. Any definitive outcome — acquisition, fundraising round, or private equity deal — would depend on how those talks progress.
Monzo is actively reviewing strategic alternatives to accelerate European growth or monetise value, with Nubank's approach one of several options on the table. The bank's underlying scale, European licence and recent operational decisions frame the context for whichever path it chooses.
