That means even if a store accepts contactless payments in general, Apple Pay may not be accepted there until the merchant or payment service provider adds explicit support. Apple has worked with several local payment platforms and processors to enable acceptance, including Cashfree, JusPay, Mswipe, Paytm, PayU, Pine Labs, Razorpay, and Worldline.
India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a state-backed system that allows instant bank-to-bank transfers and accounts for about 84% of the country's digital transactions. UPI does not integrate with Apple Pay, so most everyday digital transactions in India will continue to flow through UPI for the near term. Apple Pay adds another option for card-based contactless and online payments but does not replace or interoperate with the dominant UPI flow.
Users with eligible Axis Bank credit cards can add them to Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch to make contactless in-store payments, as well as payments in apps and on the web where Apple Pay is offered. The announcement does not state when Mac support or broader bank support will arrive.
Expect a gradual expansion. The current launch is focused on a single bank and card networks (Visa, Mastercard). Broader adoption depends on two separate factors: additional banks adding support (including debit cards and RuPay if it becomes supported) and merchants or payment processors enabling Apple Pay acceptance across terminals.
