Useful takeaways from this story.

Owners of The Phoenix Concert Theatre have submitted plans to relocate to Parkdale Hall (1605 Queen St. W.), pending rezoning and city approvals.

The proposed Parkdale venue would keep the same capped capacity as the current Phoenix: 1,350.

The search for a new site followed developer-led rezoning proposals for the Phoenix’s Sherbourne site.

The proposed Parkdale location would maintain the Phoenix's same capacity limit of 1,350 people. According to the owners, both venues will continue operating at their existing sites until approvals are secured and construction finishes. The Phoenix previously said it began searching for a new site after developers filed rezoning proposals for the Sherbourne property.

Parkdale Hall is a century-old entertainment building that originally operated as a 1,500-seat theatre in the 1920s. It was envisioned by Jay and Jules Allen and designed by architect C. Howard Crane, who also designed the Danforth Music Hall. Parkdale Hall later became a movie theatre and then an event space. Alex Chan, president of Parkdale Hall, described the move as connecting the building's long entertainment history with The Phoenix's own three-decade history.

Lisa Zbitnew, co-owner and operator of The Phoenix Concert Theatre, framed the venue as more than a concert space: a community place where Toronto audiences discover artists and where established performers reconnect with fans. The press release presented the proposal as a way to carry that community role into a building with its own entertainment legacy.

St. while approvals and any construction work happen. The owners explicitly said the current location will continue operating through 2027. There is no timeline yet for rezoning decisions, construction start dates, or a target opening date at Parkdale Hall.

Throughout its run at Sherbourne, The Phoenix has hosted a wide range of acts, including The Ramones, Foo Fighters, Rage Against The Machine, The Tragically Hip, and Broken Social Scene. Parkdale Hall itself traces back to early cinema entrepreneurs and an architect known for Toronto's historic theatres.

The relocation depends on municipal rezoning and approvals. If the city approves the proposal and construction proceeds, the plan is for The Phoenix brand and programming to move into the Parkdale Hall building while keeping the same audience capacity. Until those steps occur, both locations will continue to operate independently.

If you attend shows at The Phoenix in the near term, keep buying tickets for the Sherbourne address — the venue will continue operating there through at least 2027. Watch City Hall rezoning notices and public consultation schedules for Parkdale Hall to follow formal approval milestones.
