As the NHL opened its 2026-27 season, the American Hockey League reported 602 of its alumni on the league's 32 opening-day active rosters. That total represents more than 83 percent of the NHL's initial player pool for the season and continues a multi-year pattern of heavy AHL representation at hockey's highest level.
Player movement and recent graduates
The AHL reported that 901 of its alumni played in the NHL during the previous season, equal to 87.0 percent of all NHL players. Of those, 334 skated in both the AHL and NHL in 2025-26.
Coaching staffs also show heavy AHL influence. Twenty-two of the NHL's 32 head coaches previously led AHL teams. Recent promotions include Manny Malhotra, who became head coach of the Vancouver Canucks after two seasons with Abbotsford and a Calder Cup in 2025, and Ryan Craig, who took the Vegas Golden Knights' head-coaching job after three seasons with the Henderson Silver Knights.
Multiple former AHL head coaches were named NHL assistant coaches this offseason: Trent Vogelhuber (Columbus), Mark Letestu (Vegas), Rocky Thompson (New York Islanders), Greg Cronin (St. Louis), Pascal Vincent (Seattle), Ryan Mougenel (Vancouver), Matt McIlvane (Boston) and John Gruden (Toronto).
The AHL has operated since 1936 and functions as the NHL's top development league for players, coaches, managers, executives, broadcasters, and officials. The league pointed to other NHL players who developed in the AHL, including recent award winners and top scorers such as Nikita Kucherov and Andrei Vasilevskiy (Tampa Bay), Zach Werenski (Columbus), Logan Stankoven (Carolina), David Pastrnak (Boston) and Martin Necas (Colorado).
The AHL begins its 91st season the same opening weekend, with games and events tied to Opening Weekend presented by FloHockey.
The raw numbers—602 opening-night NHL roster spots and 901 AHL alumni appearing in the NHL last season—quantify the AHL's scale as the primary feeder to the NHL. That applies to on-ice talent as well as coaching staffs, and it affects roster construction, call-up plans, and organizational depth for NHL teams throughout the season.
