Aqara Motion Sensor P1 review: small, cheap motion sensor with mixed connectivity

A compact Zigbee motion sensor that adds a light sensor when paired to an Aqara Hub and can become a Matter accessory, but Zigbee compatibility can be flaky with third-party hubs.

Useful takeaways from this story.

Compact and inexpensive motion sensor that runs on a single CR2450 battery, which Aqara says can last up to five years.

Zigbee pairing to some third-party hubs can be unstable — the reviewer had issues keeping it on a Homey Pro 2026, but it stayed connected to an Echo Show 11.

Responsive enough for basic presence-trigger automations but less sensitive than presence sensors that detect small or stationary movement like typing.

Sensor P1 is a very small, low-cost motion sensor that uses Zigbee and can be exposed as a Matter accessory via an Aqara Hub. It includes an onboard light sensor, but that sensor is only accessible when the device is connected directly to an Aqara Hub. The device aims at simple motion-trigger use cases where price and compact size matter more than advanced detection features.

The P1 is smaller than many competing sensors and ships with an adjustable stand and two sticky pads: one to attach the stand to a surface and one for the sensor to stick to the stand. There is no screw-mount option in the box. It uses a single CR2450 battery. Replacing the battery requires removing the bottom cover and levering out the battery cage, which the reviewer described as fiddly. Aqara claims the battery life can reach up to five years.

Zigbee hubs. In practice the reviewer experienced varied results. Attempts to add the P1 to a Homey Pro 2026 initially succeeded but the device repeatedly left the Zigbee network and could not be kept connected. A connection to an Echo Show 11 proved more stable, although the light sensor data was not available there.

Connecting the P1 to an Aqara Hub provided the best experience. The hub exposed motion data, allowed configuration of detection settings (sensitivity and retrigger time), and exposed the light sensor. From the Aqara Hub the sensor can be bridged to other smart home systems, including Apple Home and Homey, via Matter. When used as a Matter accessory, the motion sensor works reliably but the light sensor is not available through Matter.

  • Low price and very compact form factor
  • Built-in light sensor when used with an Aqara Hub
  • Matter compatibility via Aqara Hub
  • Light sensor not available through Matter
  • Inconsistent Zigbee compatibility with some third-party hubs
  • Battery replacement is fiddly

Sensor P1 does what a basic motion sensor should: it detects motion quickly, is inexpensive, and is easy to install. It works best inside Aqara's ecosystem, which unlocks the light sensor and allows Matter bridging. If your setup relies on a different Zigbee hub, try one unit first to confirm stability. For more sensitive presence needs, look at dedicated presence sensors instead.
