Useful takeaways from this story.

BikeOtter connects a phone straight to a Wahoo ELEMNT over Bluetooth so routes, stops and messages reach the head unit without any cloud or mobile signal.

Unique features include route stops shown as map POIs on the unit, cross-brand group rides, a forgotten-pause alert, spoken warnings and a race mode for friends.

Live tracking reports an arrival time that accounts for remaining climbs and allows followers to send messages directly to the rider’s head unit.

# What BikeOtter is

BikeOtter is an iPhone and Android companion app for bike computers. It currently supports Wahoo ELEMNT units and connects to them directly over Bluetooth instead of routing data through the manufacturer's cloud. That direct link carries routes, route stops, messages and live-tracking data both ways between phone and head unit.

# How it works in practice

Pairing behaves like Wahoo's app: the phone pairs to the ELEMNT and then exchanges information over Bluetooth in both directions. Because nothing needs a server in the middle, BikeOtter can send a route and its stops to the unit without Wi‑Fi or mobile signal. The same link also brings back live position, ride state, battery level, paired sensors and ride files.

BikeOtter lists several features it says no maker app or other phone app offers today. These are implemented by pushing data directly to the head unit so riders see them on the device's screen rather than only in the phone app:

  • Stops on the unit's map: water, cafés and bakeries along a route are added as real points of interest and drawn on the ELEMNT map rather than buried in a turn list.
  • Forgotten-pause alert: if a rider pauses and rides off without resuming, the ELEMNT receives a message to prompt the rider because BikeOtter tracks progress along the loaded route even while the unit is paused.
  • Custom messages on the unit's screen: rules such as rain ahead or a reminder to reapply sunscreen push text to the head unit.
  • Race mode: runs a looped race among friends, counts laps, shows lap times on each head unit and reports gaps between riders.
  • Live tracking with arrival time: followers see an arrival time that accounts for climbs remaining and can send messages straight to the rider's head unit.

# Workflow examples

Before a ride, BikeOtter shows a forecast along the route at the rider's pace and gives concrete suggestions for clothing, food and tyre pressure. The developer, Jonas Acker, built the app to provide features he wanted for his own rides: live tracking with arrival time, cross-brand group rides, forgotten-pause alerts, audible warnings, weather checks and water stops shown on the map.

# Status and availability

Wahoo ELEMNT support is live. Garmin Edge support is in beta with confirmed functionality on at least the Edge 540. Coros and Hammerhead support are planned. Route sending, ride downloads and live tracking are free features.
