Thailand's Immigration Bureau unveiled the Thai Immigration (THIM) mobile app to simplify arrival formalities for international visitors and support the country's tourism target of 33 million foreign arrivals in 2026. The bureau says rising traveler volumes have strained airport and border immigration infrastructure, and the app is part of a broader digital transformation roadmap intended to speed processing and reduce congestion.
THIM currently offers a Digital Arrival Card that travelers can complete online before travel. The bureau's stated operational goal is to limit the time each traveler spends at an immigration counter to no more than 40 seconds. The system uses passport chip scanning and facial recognition along with encrypted biometric data to verify identity.
The app will roll out additional public services in later phases. Planned features listed by the bureau include queue appointment booking to manage flows at counters, online visa extension services, the 90-day residence reporting process, issuance of residence certificates, and visa-on-arrival applications. The app also contains a consumer-facing "Explore Thailand" feature that supplies QR codes tied to discounts on tourism and accommodation services.
In terms of adoption, THIM has passed an initial pilot period. It was available via the App Store, Google Play and Huawei AppGallery beginning Aug. 1 and, after nearly two months, registered more than 600,000 downloads with an activation rate reported above 97%.
The push to digitize checks aligns with other recent changes in Thailand's border services, including expanded e-gate access at Suvarnabhumi Airport for additional foreign nationalities and adjustments to visa rules for some countries. The government has also undertaken other technology initiatives this year to broaden public access to digital tools.
- Complete the Digital Arrival Card in THIM before arrival to speed processing.
- The app uses biometric verification tied to passport chip data and facial recognition.
- Additional immigration and residency services will be added over time through the same platform.
The bureau frames THIM as a strategic move to reduce queue times and modernize immigration services. Travelers arriving at Thailand's international airports and border crossings may see faster processing as the app's features and adoption grow.
