Useful takeaways from this story.

Focus modes expand Do Not Disturb into multiple profiles you can customize for work, sleep, driving and more.

You control alerts through two panels — People and Apps — choosing to allow or silence specific contacts and apps, plus Time Sensitive exceptions.

Open Settings → Focus to see default modes such as Personal, Sleep and Work, and to build your own. Each Focus uses two main panels to manage alerts: People and Apps.

Apps: select which apps can send notifications or which apps should be silenced. There's a Time Sensitive Notifications toggle that permits calendar reminders, delivery alerts and similar urgent app notifications through even when many apps are muted.

Finish setup with the Options screen. Dim Lock Screen is useful when you want the device to be visually de-emphasized, such as during sleep or when avoiding distractions in the dark.

Default Focus modes with automatic triggers

Several built-in modes include automatic activation methods:

  • Fitness: turns on when a workout starts on your iPhone or Apple Watch.
  • Gaming: activates when you connect a wireless gaming controller to the phone.
  • Mindfulness: defaults to turning on when you start a session in the Mindfulness app.
  • Sleep: follows the sleep schedule configured in Health.

If the default set doesn't match your needs, create a custom Focus. Custom modes can be given an icon and color for quick recognition. You can delete any Focus you no longer use.

Cross-device sharing and Focus status

Share Across Devices propagates the Focus you enable on your iPhone to other Apple devices on your account (iPad, Apple Watch, Mac). This usually prevents a mismatch where you silence notifications on the phone but still get them on your watch.

Emergency Bypass sits outside the Focus menus and is worth configuring for people whose calls or texts must sound even when the phone is silent. Use it sparingly for genuinely urgent contacts.

  • Start with one or two modes (Work and Sleep) and add rules gradually.
  • Enable Share Across Devices if you wear an Apple Watch or use an iPad to keep behavior consistent.
  • Test automatic activations (car Bluetooth, workout start, controller connection) so modes trigger when you expect.
