Useful takeaways from this story.

Active Noise Cancellation is now standard and Apple says ANC removes up to 50% more noise than AirPods 4.

New internal design and next-generation Adaptive EQ aim to improve sound across more ear shapes and boost Personalized Spatial Audio.

Apple introduced the AirPods 5 during its Surprise and Shine event. The new model keeps a similar outward design to the AirPods 4 but updates the internals. The headline changes focus on noise control, sound tuning, and pricing. Pre-orders are open and shipments start September 18.

Noise cancellation and listening modes

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is now standard across the AirPods 5 lineup. Apple credits a new multi-port acoustic architecture plus improved computational audio algorithms for better ANC performance. Apple claims the AirPods 5 remove up to 50 percent more noise compared with the AirPods 4.

Transparency mode has also been revised to render voices and environmental sounds more naturally. The Adaptive Audio feature monitors your surroundings and switches between ANC and Transparency automatically, aiming to balance isolation and awareness without manual switching.

The same multi-port acoustic architecture that improves ANC works with a next-generation Adaptive EQ. Apple says this EQ produces better sound across a wider range of ear geometries. Personalized Spatial Audio is also said to sound more immersive on the AirPods 5 thanks to these changes.

Apple rates the AirPods 5 for up to 4 hours of playback on a single charge with ANC active and up to 7 hours when Noise Control is turned off. The company notes the testing methods changed versus the AirPods 4: the AirPods 4 ANC figure was measured with ANC turned off in testing, while the AirPods 5 figures are stated with ANC on. That change in test conditions affects direct comparisons.

Charging and features that differ by case

There are two available configurations. The base AirPods 5 at $129 includes a USB-C wired charging case that requires a cable to recharge. The $149 version adds a wireless charging case and also brings on-stem volume controls similar to the AirPods Pro. If you want wireless charging or integrated stem volume controls, choose the $149 model.

The AirPods 5 start at $129 for the model with the wired charging case. The wireless-charging case model is $149. Apple positions the new pricing as a reduction compared with previous ANC-equipped AirPods 4 configurations: the AirPods 5 with wireless charging and ANC is still $30 cheaper than the prior AirPods 4 with ANC. Pre-orders began at announcement and shipments start on September 18.

  • Noise reduction: Apple claims up to 50% improvement versus AirPods 4.

The AirPods 5 focus on improving core listening and noise-control performance while shifting the entry price point to include ANC. The wired charging case on the $129 model is the main trade-off if you prefer wireless charging or on-stem volume controls.

The weird and wonderful headphones of CanJam 2026

I've been reviewing headphones for a long time, and I've listened to everything from the barely serviceable to multi-thousand-dollar open-back headphones. But recently I've been uninspired by the state of mainstream options. Most are perfectly good - great, even - but they lack a distinct character. Something to remind
