JustWatch, the streaming guide known for telling viewers where to find movies and TV shows, is adding its own streaming service called JustWatch TV. The company announced the plan during the Toronto International Film Festival. The new service will be built into the existing JustWatch website and mobile apps and will go live in October.
JustWatch TV will offer three distinct options at launch:
- Free ad-supported streaming (AVOD): a tier with TV shows and movies supported by ads.
- Transactional rentals and purchases (TVOD): titles available to buy or rent on demand.
Because JustWatch is adding streaming inside its discovery platform, the service will retain the app's ability to point users to where titles are available. If a title isn't hosted on JustWatch TV, the app will link to other platforms that carry it, including competing services.
JustWatch TV will first roll out in these countries: the United States, France, Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. The company intends to add more regions later, though no specific timetable was provided.
- Pricing for the paid subscription tier has not been revealed. The company only noted that the paid option will offer movies with no ad breaks.
- The full catalog size, launch slate of titles and any exclusive programming were not detailed in the announcement.
JustWatch already serves as a universal guide: users search for a title and the app shows where to stream, rent, or buy. Adding a playback layer changes the relationship with audiences: viewers can either watch titles directly inside the JustWatch environment or be routed to other services when a title isn't available on JustWatch TV. That makes the platform both a streaming destination and a discovery hub.
