What this GeoTour is
GeoTour (GT506) is a 15-stop geocaching route across North Carolina that encourages visitors to explore less obvious places off main roads. It launched September 19, 2026. Each stop pairs a geocache with a local site — trails, small towns, natural features, and unusual attractions — and provides a unique code word for a GeoTour passport.
The tour is presented on the Geocaching blog by Phil Smith and links to more visitor information at VisitNC.com/Real-Rare.
Why this matters for geocachers
Instead of concentrating on a single city or park, the GeoTour spreads caches across diverse locations, so visitors can plan a regional drive-and-hike itinerary or pick a few destinations near one another. The passport-and-coin system gives a concrete reward for visiting multiple stops: record the code word at each site, mail a completed passport, and receive a commemorative coin.
Notable stops to plan around
- Shangri-La Stone Village (GCBJT8W): A miniature stone village built by Henry Warren starting at age 72. The site includes around 27 small stone structures such as a church, school, theater, and mill.
- Kindred Spirit Mailbox at Bird Island (GCBM92C): A quiet shoreline walk leads to a mailbox where visitors have left journal entries and personal reflections for decades.
Other stops highlight the birthplace of a regional soft drink, the town that inspired a well-known TV setting, sculpture gardens, and additional outdoor adventures.

Practical considerations
