You can build a skill to handle routine tasks such as outlining slide decks, drafting content in your voice, or generating multiple distinct perspectives for brainstorming. For longer workflows, you can combine—or "stack"—multiple skills at once. For example, run a writing-style skill together with a brand-guidelines skill to generate on-brand content in a consistent voice.
Starting with this rollout, skills can include reference files: plain text documents, PDFs, and images. Attaching files lets Gemini use concrete inputs when performing the saved instruction, which produces more specific, relevant outputs faster. Stacking skills lets you apply several saved instructions to a single prompt, which helps when tasks need multiple constraints (tone, format, brand rules).
Skills are replacing Gems. Google will migrate existing Gems into Skills automatically when Gems are removed. The timeline for shutting down Gems and related experiments is phased by account type:
