Useful takeaways from this story.

Chirantan “CJ” Desai, formerly MongoDB CEO, will lead the new unit and report to Mark Zuckerberg.

Meta enters a market dominated by Microsoft and Salesforce but leverages massive consumer reach, messaging channels, and large-scale infrastructure, alongside heavy 2026 data center spending.

Meta announced Meta Enterprise Platform as a new business unit that packages the company's models, agents, coding tools, and infrastructure into deployable products for other companies. The move aims to extend Meta's relationship with businesses beyond advertising and messaging into operational roles inside companies.

The initial technology stack includes several named components:

  • Muse: Meta's general-purpose agent that can perform multistep tasks like sending emails and booking travel. Muse launched this month in the U.S. across iOS, Android, web, and WhatsApp.
  • Meta Business Agent: Aimed at companies, this agent answers customer questions, recommends products, books appointments, qualifies leads, and closes sales. Meta says more than one million businesses already use a Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger.

Meta also describes a Business Agent Platform for larger organizations that can connect to hundreds of systems such as Shopify, Zendesk, and Shopee, and provides enterprise controls, guardrails, and measurement tools for defining agent behavior.

Leadership and organizational intent

Meta recruited Chirantan "CJ" Desai to run the unit as chief enterprise platform officer. Desai's background includes serving as CEO of MongoDB, product and engineering leadership at Cloudflare, and several roles at ServiceNow. He reports directly to Mark Zuckerberg. Meta says the Enterprise Platform will focus on turning its existing stack into products and services companies can deploy themselves.

The new unit puts Meta squarely into a market with established players embedding agent capabilities into business workflows. Microsoft offers agents across Microsoft 365 Copilot and Dynamics 365, including agents that access organizational data and take actions like sending emails or updating records. Salesforce has expanded agent tooling across CRM workflows through Agentforce.

Meta lacks Microsoft's productivity suite and Salesforce's CRM footprint, but it has other advantages: large consumer reach, widely used messaging services, existing business threads between customers and businesses, and considerable infrastructure. Meta highlights daily business threads across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram that already support customer interactions.

Meta frames Enterprise Platform as an additional path to monetize its growing infrastructure. The company expects substantial 2026 capital expenditures driven in part by data center capacity, with a 2026 capex range reported between $130 billion and $145 billion.

Meta's path into enterprise starts at customer-facing operations: it can offer agent-driven customer service, commerce interactions, and small-business productivity tools that sit on top of its messaging reach. For larger enterprises, the Business Agent Platform offers system integrations and controls that enterprises typically require.

Implications for businesses and vendors

For businesses, Meta's platform represents another option to add agent-driven automation to customer engagement and back-office workflows, especially for organizations already using Meta's messaging channels. For competitors, Meta expands the set of choices companies weigh when adopting agent-driven tools, particularly where customer messaging and scale matter.

Meta Enterprise Platform assembles the company's public-facing models, agents, developer tools, and infrastructure into a dedicated business unit led by an experienced enterprise software executive. The platform competes in an already crowded market but leverages Meta's messaging footprint and infrastructure investment to pursue business use cases starting with customer-facing operations.
