Datadog is hiring a Developer Advocate focused on service management. The role is aimed at engineers who combine production operations experience with the ability to create publicly consumable technical content. The central mission: help customers and internal teams solve service-management problems — incident response, running on-call, post-incident processes, and operational automation — while building Datadog's visibility in SRE, DevOps, and operations communities.
You will act as the subject matter expert for service management across Datadog's advocacy and engineering teams. Typical activities include:
- Producing technical content across formats: demos, blog posts, webinars, documentation, talks, open source contributions, and research reports.
- Partnering with product engineering to build demos and coach internal engineering teams on presentations and communication.
- Engaging with open source communities to promote messaging and develop integrations for Datadog.
- Feeding product teams with practical feedback: bug reports, documentation fixes, enhancement suggestions, and code contributions.
The posting targets practitioners with roughly 5+ years of experience as a Platform Engineer, Site Reliability Engineer, DevOps Engineer, or Software Developer who have been on-call and managed production systems. You should have:
- Strong working knowledge of core service-management practices: incident response, on-call rotations, post-incident reviews, and SLOs.
- Experience with tools in the space (Datadog and/or PagerDuty, Opsgenie, incident.io, Rootly, Jira Cloud Platform, Cortex, etc.) and familiarity with operational challenges across different organization sizes.
- Around 2+ years creating technical content or public-facing storytelling: blog posts, conference talks (SREcon, DevOpsDays, etc.), workshops, videos, or open source work.
- Publicly available writing samples, demos, or recordings demonstrating your communication skills.
- Comfort with at least one scripting or programming language (Node.js, Python, Go, bash), working with APIs, and modern infrastructure (IaaS and containers).
Datadog lists these as bonuses rather than strict requirements:
- Hands-on experience with ITSM platforms like ServiceNow or Jira Service Management.
- Active participation in SRE, DevOps, or incident-response communities.
The posting includes a reasonably estimated salary range of $136,000–$170,000 USD. Benefits and growth offerings mentioned are stock equity (RSUs), an employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), healthcare, dental, parental planning, mental health benefits, 401(k) with match, paid time off, fitness reimbursements, product training, onboarding programs, and internal mentoring. Benefits may vary by country and employment type.
The role is remote with headquarters listed in California and New York. The description emphasizes a team of engineers who translate real operational experience into community guidance. Datadog emphasizes a friendly and inclusive workplace and invites applicants who may not meet every listed qualification but are passionate about technology and growth.
Apply if you have hands-on experience running production systems and on-call responsibilities, can demonstrate public technical writing or speaking, are comfortable producing demos and technical artifacts, and want a role that mixes engineering with external-facing education and advocacy.
