# Bell of the Week — Dr. S. Venkateswaran Dr. S. Venkateswaran joined the Patent Office in Calcutta in 1930 as a patent examiner. In 1935 he published The Law of Trade and Merchandise Marks in India, arguing that India lacked a statutory system to register trademarks and that traders were forced to rely on passing-off suits.
His 1935 book was described in a contemporary review as both a comprehensive guide and a persuasive case for legislation. The Trade Marks Act, 1940 drew on recommendations he made, and IP India's history notes his work as important to that legislative development. Venkateswaran later became Assistant Registrar of Trade Marks in 1940, Registrar in 1954, and in 1959 the first Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks.
