Brody Frieden, an academic advisor in the University of Nebraska at Omaha's College of Business Administration, was named the Academic Advising Council (AAC) Advisor of the Month for August. The award was presented at the AAC meeting in September.

Colleagues nominated Frieden for his quick integration into advising work at UNO and for a student-focused approach. Nominators praised several concrete practices:

  • and confidence.
  • Maintaining advising notes described as "thoughtful, thorough, and student-centered," which help other advisors provide seamless follow-up.
  • Tailoring conversations to individual student circumstances, including academic, financial, and family concerns.
  • Contributing positively to the advising team's culture through enthusiasm, a collaborative spirit, and a light, engaging presence.

As AAC Advisor of the Month, Frieden received a certificate and $50 loaded onto his MavCARD.

How the AAC Advisor of the Month works

Council accepts nominations for advisors who have at least a 0.5 FTE and whose primary role is academic advising. Each month the council recognizes all nominees and selects one nominee at random to receive the monthly award at an AAC meeting. Once selected, an advisor is not eligible to receive the award again for one calendar year, though they may still be nominated in recognition of their work.

About the Academic Advising Council

The AAC began in 2011 and holds monthly forums that cover advising best practices, technology, and program updates. Meetings are open to the public and typically occur the third Thursday of each month at 1:30 P.M. The council includes advisors and other campus professionals who support UNO students.

To nominate a colleague for the Advisor of the Month Award, complete the nomination form available on the AAC website. For questions or contact related to the council, use the Academic Advising Council email: unoaac@unomaha.edu.

Why this matters to UNO students and staff

The award highlights everyday advising work that affects student progress and experience: consistent documentation, individualized advising conversations, and collaborative team practices. By publicly recognizing these behaviors, AAC signals what kinds of advising practices the university values and encourages peers to share effective approaches.
